Hires’ style is reminiscent of early OAR (think About An Hour Ago circa The Wanderer) but with no backing vocals and just a little acoustic guitar to keep him company. He also reminds me a lot of Matt Nathanson.
Artist: Tom Odell Song: Can’t Pretend [Live at Dean Street Studios]
Reminds me of: The male Adele, with hints of Jeff Buckley
Tom Odell has been around for a while — the 23 year old Brit released his debut album in October of 2012 and has been gaining high praise ever since. Odell’s piano work is reminiscent of a young Elton John, whom he cites among his many influences, including David Bowie, Billy Joel, and Tom Waits, to name a few.
His music is dark and painful, and it’s clear that it comes from a deep place in Odell’s soul. Far from light entertainment, this is the type of music that sometimes hurts to hear. But damn is it beautiful.
